Clearing on reclaimed surface-mine ground

The soil profile under reclaimed ground is constructed rather than natural, and it behaves differently from the moment you disturb it.

A meaningful share of ground across Warrick, Pike, Gibson and Vanderburgh counties has been surface mined and reclaimed. Around Chandler, Boonville and north through the old coal field it is common enough that an owner may not realise their parcel is part of it.

It matters because reclaimed ground is not natural ground. The profile was reconstructed after mining — spoil replaced, graded, covered and revegetated — and the result behaves differently from undisturbed soil in ways that show up in a clearing project.

None of this makes the ground unusable. It makes it worth understanding before you scope work on it.

What the ground is actually like

Compaction is the defining characteristic. Reclamation involves moving and replacing enormous volumes of material with heavy equipment, and the result is often dense and poorly structured compared with undisturbed soil.

The consequences are practical: water infiltrates slowly and sits on the surface or in low spots, root penetration is limited so trees establish shallowly, and the topsoil layer may be thin or replaced with a subsoil-like material.

Old cuts and depressions hold water long after surrounding ground has dried, and some hold it permanently. Those are useful to know about before scheduling equipment.

What grows there and why it fights back

Reclaimed ground was typically revegetated with whatever established fastest, and it has since been colonised by the species that thrive on disturbed sites — autumn olive, honeysuckle, black locust, sericea lespedeza and various volunteer scrub.

Several of these were planted deliberately during reclamation eras when they were considered useful. That is why they are so dominant, and it is also why they resprout so aggressively: these are species selected for their ability to establish on hostile ground.

The practical upshot is that clearing reclaimed ground reliably needs a follow-up plan. A single pass on locust and autumn olive is the beginning of a programme.

Obligations that travel with the deed

Reclaimed mine land can carry obligations recorded against the parcel — bond release status, post-mining land use designations, and restrictions on what may be done with the ground.

This is a title and deed question rather than a clearing question, and it is worth checking before making plans that assume a particular use. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources' division dealing with reclamation is the relevant authority, and the county recorder holds what is recorded against the parcel.

  • Assuming a parcel is undisturbed ground when it has mining history.

Can you build on reclaimed mine ground?

It happens, but it is a question for engineers rather than for a clearing contractor or for us.
