Crossing a creek on your property

A creek crossing is a permitting question and a structural question before it is a clearing question.

Plenty of properties here are split by a creek, and the back half is useless without a way across. It is one of the most common access problems on rural acreage in this region.

It is also the point where a clearing project stops being purely private. Work in and around flowing water is regulated at levels above the county, and doing it without checking is a genuine risk rather than a technicality.

The structure itself is an engineering question, and getting it wrong is expensive: undersized crossings wash out, take fill downstream with them, and often take the approaches too.

Establish what is allowed before designing anything

Work in a stream channel, in a floodway, or affecting waters and wetlands can involve the county drainage board, the state, and in some circumstances federal requirements. Which of those apply depends on the watercourse and the work.

The practical route is to ask the county first, and to expect that a genuine creek — as opposed to a field swale — brings requirements beyond the county. A contractor who proposes to install a crossing without any of this being mentioned is not the right contractor for this job.

Culvert, ford or bridge

A culvert with fill over it is the common answer where flows allow. Its whole risk is sizing: undersized culverts back water up, wash out and take the crossing with them. Sizing is based on the drainage area upstream and flood flows, not on how the creek looks on a dry day.

A ford is cheap and works where the bed is firm and the crossing is occasional, but it is unusable in high water and can be problematic for the stream itself. A bridge spans rather than constricts, is the best hydraulic answer, and costs the most.

The approaches matter as much as the crossing

Crossings usually sit at the low point, which means the approaches run downhill toward the water and channel runoff straight into it. That erodes the approaches and puts sediment into the creek.

Getting water off the approach before it reaches the crossing — with grade breaks and diversions — is what makes a crossing durable. It is also usually a condition of doing this work responsibly.

  • Building approaches that funnel runoff straight into the channel.
  • Using a ford as a year-round access route.
  • Pushing fill or clearing debris into the channel.

  • An excavator for the crossing structure, bank shaping and placement
  • Trucks for stone and fill, which are usually larger quantities than expected
  • A mulcher or skid steer for clearing the approach corridors
  • Erosion-control materials, which are part of the job rather than an extra

Permitting considerations

  • The county drainage board governs regulated drains; a genuine watercourse can involve state requirements.
  • Work in a floodway or floodplain has its own approvals, and this region has a great deal of both.
  • Waters and wetlands can bring federal requirements depending on the circumstances.
  • Erosion and sediment control during construction is normally required, not optional.

Weather and ground conditions

  • Construction needs low flow, which usually means late summer.
  • Any partly built crossing is at risk from a rain event, so the work window matters.
  • Approaches and disturbed banks need stabilising before the next significant rainfall.
