Excavators: the machine that digs and lifts

The only common clearing machine that can pull material out of the ground rather than push it across the surface.

An excavator is a tracked machine with a boom, arm and a rotating house. That rotation is the important part: it can work in one position and place material anywhere within its swing, which is why it is the machine of choice for anything precise.

In clearing it does the work no other machine does well — pulling stumps and root plates out, digging drainage, loading trucks, and working carefully in tight places.

It is also the most versatile machine on most sites, because the attachment on the end changes what it is.

Where it excels

Stump and root removal, which is its defining role in this trade. It can dig around a root plate and lift it out rather than pushing at it, which removes more of the root system and leaves less to settle later.

It is also the machine for precision — working next to a structure, a fence or a tree that must survive, where a dozer's only mode is forward. And it loads trucks, which no other clearing machine does well.

Where it stops

It is comparatively slow at moving material across a site. Pushing a large volume of soil or debris a hundred yards is dozer work; an excavator doing it is repositioning constantly.

It is not a grading machine in the finish sense. It can rough-shape competently and some operators are remarkably good at it, but final grade over an area belongs to a dozer or a box blade.

And on standing vegetation it is far less efficient than a mulcher unless it is carrying a mulching head.

Attachments change the machine

A bucket digs. A thumb lets it grip and place. A grapple handles brush and logs. A mulching head turns it into a vegetation machine with reach. A root rake separates woody material from soil.

This is why an excavator is often the machine that stays on site longest — it can be several different tools across a project without a second mobilisation.

Where this commonly goes wrong

  • Using an excavator to move bulk material across a site where a dozer would be far faster.
  • Bringing a machine too small for the stumps, then paying for the hours.
  • Expecting finish grade from an excavator.
  • Not asking which attachments are coming, then finding the right one is not on site.
  • Underestimating the space needed to unload and turn a tracked machine and its float.

Excavator or stump grinder for stumps?

An excavator pulls the root plate out, leaving a hole to backfill and removing most of the root system. A grinder chips the stump down in place, leaves the roots and leaves chips rather than a hole. For a building pad the excavator's result is what you want; for a stump in a finished lawn, grinding is far less disruptive.

Can an excavator clear standing brush?

With a mulching head or a grapple, yes, and the reach is genuinely useful for working over a ditch or into a bank. With a bucket it is inefficient compared to a purpose-built mulcher. Ask what attachments are coming, because it makes a large difference to what the machine can do that day.

What size excavator do I need?

Bigger than you think for stumps, and small enough to fit where the work is. Undersized machines struggle on large root plates and the extra hours usually exceed what the larger machine would have cost to bring. This is a good question to ask a contractor who has walked the site, since they are balancing both constraints.
